Today, VanWest Students enjoyed Vancouver and Kelowna’s Eclipse together with millions of people across North America.
In Vancouver, the moon covered approximately 85% of the sun. It was not a complete eclipse, but everyone was excited about the chance to see this rare, beautiful sight! Thousands of people stepped out onto the streets to try to catch a glimpse of it. In addition, the weather was perfect – clear and sunny!
Students saw the skies slowly start to darken starting around 9 AM. The maximum eclipse was scheduled to be at 10:21. So, at break time, teachers and students both rushed out.
Teachers and staff made sure to remind everyone that it is very dangerous to stare at the sun with no protection. If students didn’t have special glasses, they couldn’t look directly at the sun. So, what did we do?
There are many cool ways to enjoy it! If you find a kind stranger, they can lend you their glasses so you can have a look. If not, you can use a piece of paper and poke a hole through it – the shadow will show you the Eclipse’s shape. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful crescent-shaped shadows on the ground, made from trees and papers. People even used their hands to create circular shapes and see the eclipse’s shadow. As a last resort, you could watch one of the live video feeds the teachers put up in their classrooms.
