English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses will prepare students who want to achieve academic success in English-speaking universities. Courses cover a variety of relevant and interesting topics, both Canadian and international. As well, EAP will also provide a solid foundation of language skills for students preparing for high stakes official exams such as IELTS, CAE, and BULATS.

– Level progression is dependent on a number of considerations including weekly writing and speaking tasks, listening and reading tests, attitude, attendance, and completion of outside classroom course work. To progress to a new level, students must achieve an overall score of 75% or better.
Reading
Apply strategies to read, comprehend, analyze, and respond critically to academic texts, including: previewing using a variety of strategies, reading for main ideas and details, using footnotes and glosses, and recognizing different text types.
Writing
Demonstrate the use of writing strategies such as outlining, editing and revising, researching, and giving feedback to others in order to compose paragraphs and essays of different types.
Listening
Demonstrate strategies for active listening including listening to: predict content, understand main ideas and details, and discern the structure of a listening.
Speaking
Participate effectively during group discussions; stating opinions, and leading a conversation.
Prerequisite: Completion of Level 2
Reading
Apply strategies to read, comprehend, analyze, and respond critically to a variety of different academic text types, including locating specific information through skimming and scanning, creating an outline to understand how a text is organized, previewing a text through a variety of strategies, and reading for main ideas and details to create a summary, chart, or graphic.
Writing
Demonstrate the use of writing strategies such as researching information, creating an outline, understanding the elements of different essay types, writing 5+ paragraph essays, and using editing and peer feedback strategies using a rubric.
Listening
Demonstrate strategies for active listening including understanding main ideas and details, predicting the content and structure of a listening, understanding the speaker’s idioms, tone, and intention.

Demonstrate strategies for active listening including understanding main ideas and details, predicting the content and structure of a listening, understanding the speaker’s idioms, tone, and intention.
Prerequisite: Completion of EAP 100 or Level 4
Focus
EAP 300 integrates the four main skills of English with academic language. Using authentic materials, the course provides practical help in developing essential skills for academic study.
Prerequisite: Completion of EAP 200 or Level 6
Focus
This course focuses on developing skills necessary to perform within a post-secondary setting.
Prerequisite: Completion of EAP 300 or Level 8
