Read that median with the grouping in mind. WorkBC notes that the occupational code combines educators and assistants, and that assistants are paid less, which pulls the reported figure down. Certified ECEs generally sit above it, and the province’s ECE Wage Enhancement adds an hourly top-up for those who qualify.

Actual compensation depends on certification level, experience, location, employer and responsibilities. Employment is not guaranteed.

Helping Little Minds Grow

What Is an Early Childhood Education Assistant?

An Early Childhood Education Assistant supports the care, learning, development and well-being of young children under the supervision of a certified Early Childhood Educator.

Day-to-day responsibilities

In British Columbia, ECEAs may work in licensed child care centres, preschools, family-resource programs, community settings, and before- or after-school programs.

Common responsibilities can include:

  • Supporting play-based learning activities
  • Helping maintain safe and inclusive environments
  • Assisting with meals and daily routines
  • Observing children’s development
  • Supporting positive behaviour
  • Keeping basic records
  • Communicating with educators and families
  • Helping children develop confidence and social skills

To work as an ECEA in most licensed child care programs in B.C., you need certification from the provincial ECE Registry. B.C. regulations require a first-time applicant to complete at least one recognised course in child development, child guidance, or child health, safety and nutrition. Applicants must also satisfy the Registry’s character, suitability, training and skills requirements.

ECEA Certificate vs Early Childhood Education Certificate

The ECEA pathway and the full ECE pathway support different education and career goals.

Choose our ECEA course when you want to enter the field quickly, satisfy the educational requirement for an ECEA application, or test whether early childhood education is the right long-term direction.

Our 11-month Early Childhood Education Certificate trains you to lead your own program, includes three supervised practicums, and prepares you for full ECE certification. Every course you take here counts towards it. You can see the full side-by-side comparison on that page.

Start Small. Dream Big.

Why Choose Our ECEA Fast-Track Program?

Complete Your Training in 2–4 Weeks

The short format allows you to complete an approved ECE course without immediately committing to an 11-month certificate.

Two course options run for two weeks and include 50 instructional hours. The child growth and development course runs for four weeks and includes 100 hours.

Attend Evening Classes in Vancouver

Classes run Monday to Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. This schedule may suit students balancing daytime responsibilities, although regular attendance and concentrated evening study remain essential.

Choose a Course That Matches Your Interests

You can focus on:

  • Child growth and development
  • Positive approaches to behaviour
  • Health, safety and nutrition
Each option addresses an educational area recognised for an initial ECEA certification application in British Columbia.

Receive Certification-Application Support

We provide guidance with course selection, academic planning, B.C. ECEA certification preparation and the application process. Certification is issued by the B.C. ECE Registry and is not automatically issued through course completion.

Choose Your ECEA-Qualifying Course

Our ECEA pathway provides three course options. Successfully completing one course can satisfy the education component for an initial B.C. ECEA certification application.

Study at Vancouver Location

Learn More

We deliver the ECEA program at our Vancouver location at 200-1016 Nelson Street in downtown Vancouver, close to public transportation.

Students relocating for the course can review our student housing options, including homestay and Vancouver residences.

Because the course runs for only 2–4 weeks, confirm minimum booking periods and total housing costs before reserving a room.

How B.C. ECEA Certification Works

Completing our course is the educational step. It is not the final provincial certification step.

Explore How

Step 1: Complete One Approved Course

Successfully complete EC1100, EC1200 or EC1300 and receive the applicable single-course credential.

Step 2: Prepare Your Registry Application

Create or access your account through the B.C. My ECE Registry platform and follow the application pathway for an Early Childhood Educator Assistant certificate.

Step 3: Submit the Required Evidence

The Registry may require:
  • Proof of your recognised course
  • Identity information
  • Character information
  • Evidence of appropriate temperament and suitability
  • Relevant training or experience
  • Evidence of your ability to work with children

Step 4: Wait for the Registry Decision

Only the B.C. ECE Registry can issue the provincial certificate. Course completion does not guarantee approval when another certification requirement remains unmet.

Step 5: Maintain and Renew Your Certificate

A B.C. ECEA certificate expires on the fifth anniversary of its issue date.
Current renewal rules require:
  • Good character
  • 400 hours of relevant early childhood education work experience
  • One additional recognised ECE course completed within the applicable five-year period
Certification and renewal rules can change, so review the current B.C. requirements before applying or renewing.

What Skills Can You Build?

Depending on your selected course, you can build knowledge in:

  • Child growth and developmental patterns
  • Objective observation
  • Reflective practice
  • Positive behaviour guidance
  • Inclusive and culturally responsive support
  • Health, hygiene and infection prevention
  • Injury and illness documentation
  • Nutrition and basic meal planning
  • Communication with families and educators
  • Safe and supportive early learning environments
  • Recognition of individual support needs

Our program provides classroom-based training rather than a practicum. Practical workplace competence continues to develop through employment, professional supervision, ongoing learning and further education.

ECEA Career Opportunities in British Columbia

ECEAs work under the supervision of ECEs and can support children in:

  • Licensed child care centres
  • Daycares
  • Preschools
  • Family-resource programs
  • Community centres
  • Before- and after-school programs
  • Other early learning environments

Possible job titles include Early Childhood Education Assistant, child care assistant, daycare aide, preschool helper and early childhood program assistant.

WorkBC projects 13,010 openings for the combined early childhood educator and assistant occupational group in British Columbia from 2025 to 2035. The same occupational profile reports a provincial median wage of CAD $24 per hour.

These figures combine ECE and ECEA positions and should not be treated as a guaranteed ECEA wage or employment outcome. Actual compensation depends on certification, experience, location, employer and responsibilities.
